Benjamin Mkapa, Former President of Tanzania Passes Away At 81

Benjamin Mkapa, Tanzania's third president died at age 81 while receiving treatment at the Dar es Salaam Hospital, according to a statement from President John Magufuli. 

The President declared that all flags will be flown at half-staff while the country undertakes a seven day mourning period.

Mkapa was elected President in 1995 and served two-five year terms until 2005. His policies are known for opening doors for investors and cancelling foreign debts.

He leaves behind his wife, Anna Mkapa and three children.

According to Prime Minister Kassim Majaaliwa, the funeral for Mkapa will be on July 29th.
