Entertainment Throwback: 'The Corner'

The Corner' is a HBO miniseries written by David Simon and David Mills. It was the adaptation version of the book 'The Corner: A Year In The Life Of An Inner-City Neighborhood' by David Simon and Ed Burns.

It premiered on April 16th, 2000 and ended on May 21, 2000 as it was a six hour series. The series focused on the life of a family living in Baltimore and won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Series. 

Show starred TK Carter, Khandi Alexander, Sean Nelson and Glenn Plummer as well as many notables from 'The Wire' such as Clarke Peters, Reg R. Cathey, Corey Parker Robinson and Maria Bloom.

Phil Collins released the classic gem "Do You Remember?" in 1989 on his fourth album ...But Seriously.

The track went straight to #1 in Canada and #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 which made it his 3rd top ten single from the album. Collins wrote the song and also produced it along with Hugh Padgham.

On This Day: Richard Skrenta Writes The First Virus Code For a Pc - Elk Cloner

 



On This Day In 1982, 15 year-old Richard Skrenta released the world's first computer virus into the world. While it was intended as a joke, during winter break from high school Skrenta discovered how to send messages automatically on his Apple II Computer. 

He then created the "Elk Cloner" and found a way to have the message transferred by attaching itself to the boot sector through floppy disks. 

Skrenta began circulating the virus among friends at the school's computer club and they would later stop borrowing disk from him.

Passage: The Legendary & Iconic Cicely Tyson Passes Away At 96



Cicely Tyson won two Emmys for her performance in "The  Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman".

Pioneering and trailblazing Hollywood icon Cicely Tyson has passed away at 96 years-old.

The two-time Emmy winner was the first Black woman to take a main role in a TV Drama, first Black woman to wear her natural hair on TV, first Black Woman to host 'Saturday Night Love' and the first Black woman to receive an honorary Academy Award.

Here is a clip from her first film 'Carib Gold' in 1956.

Sports Throwback: Andre Agassi Defeats Pete Sampras In The 1995 Australian Open Final






Agassi and Sampras were the two premier Male tennis players of their generation.


The 1995 Australian Open Men's Tennis Final saw Andre Agassi win the 1st of his 4 Australian titles by defeating fellow American Pete Sampras.

Sets finished as 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 and 6-4.

On This Day In 2004: 'Mydoom' Computer Virus First Appears In North America



According to reports, one percent of emails in 2019 were Mydoom emails.

On This Day In 2004, the 'Mydoom' computer virus was first seen in North America.

At the time, it was the most destructive worm and caused approximately $38 billion in damages.

It affected Microsoft Windows through email spam. The message on the worm read "andy, I'm just doing my job, nothing personal, sorry,".

There was a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the creator. It is still the fastest spreading email virus of all time.

Historical Birthdays: Antonio Carlos Jobim

Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim was born on this day in 1927 to Jorge de Oliveira Jobim and Nilza Brasilerio de Almeida in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He is widely known as on of the greatest Brazilian artists of all time and important songwriters of the 21st century. He is also regarded by many as the father of bossa nova music.

His 1965 album 'Getz/Giberto' was the first jazz album to win Album of the Year at the Grammys while the hit single "Garota De Ipanema" (The Girl From Ipanema) won Record of the Year.

His career kicked off in 1956 when he wrote the music for the play 'Orfeu da Conceição'. His songs garnered significant attention after a performance at Carnegie Hall in 1962.

Jobim passed away in 1994 at age 67.

On This Day In 1554, the city of São Paulo in Brazil was founded.

The Portuguese village São Paulo dos Campos de Pirantininga is known as the founding place that has developed into modern day São Paulo.

Settlement did not take place until 1560. It is now the 4th most populous city in the world.

In 2009, after Kobe Bryant helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their 15th NBA Championship, he sought skills council from legendary big man Hakeem Olajuwon.

Years later Olajuwon spoke about his sessions with Kobe and said "I've worked with a lot of players, but the one who really capitalized on it the most is Kobe Bryant. When I watch him play, he'll go down in the post comfortably, naturally, and he'll execute it perfectly."
