The government of Canada was forced to shut down the majority of its online portals over the weekend as their were about 300,00 attempts to access many of the government systems.
More than 11,000 accounts that include COVID-19 relief programs and tax accounts were compromised.
"The credentials used in the attack came from previous, non-government of Canada data breaches. They were effective because Canadians reused old passwords on government of Canada systems," said Scott Jones, head of Canada's Centre for Cyber Security.
This comes after there were a record number of Canadian citizens trying to access online to apply for aid during the coronavirus lockdown.
