On This Day In 1998, Lauryn Hill began her career as a solo artist with the debut of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
The album was lauded for its commentary regarding life from a woman's perspective, pregnancy, love and God. Upon its release, it went straight to #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 422,000 copies in the first week. The three singles promoted were "Everything is Everything", "Ex-Factor" and "Doo Wop (That Thing).
At the 1999 Grammy Awards, Hill claimed 10 nominations and won 5 awards including Album of the Year. The project became the first hip-hop album to ever receive that award and she was the first woman to receive that many awards and nominations in one night.
