On This Day In 1977: U.S. President Jimmy Carter Pardons Vietnam War Draft Dodgers


President Jimmy Carter made good on his promise a day after taking office.


On This Day In 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter used his power on the first full day of his administration to give an unconditional pardon to those who evaded the Vietnam War draft.

Hundreds of Thousands of American men left the country during the 1960s and early 1970s to avoid being chosen while some hid within the U.S. They all faced prison time or forced military service upon returning or being found.

Carter made a promise during his presidential campaign that he would pardon all draft dodgers in effort to put the things of the war in the past.

Many Americans returned home but some chose to settle permanently in their new countries. Canada gained over 50,000 new residents.
