On This Day In 1982, 15 year-old Richard Skrenta released the world's first computer virus into the world. While it was intended as a joke, during winter break from high school Skrenta discovered how to send messages automatically on his Apple II Computer.
He then created the "Elk Cloner" and found a way to have the message transferred by attaching itself to the boot sector through floppy disks.
Skrenta began circulating the virus among friends at the school's computer club and they would later stop borrowing disk from him.
