On This Day In 1870: The First Motion Picture Was Shown In Philadelphia


Pre-cinema began to end in 1870 after the Phasmatrope was used at the Academy of Music.

On this day in 1870, Henry R. Heyl unveiled his Phasmatrope at the Philadelphia Academy of Music using glass transparencies of a sequence of static poses mounted round a disc fitted with an intermittent mechanism and shutter which was projected by a magic lantern.
