On This Day In 1893: Thomas Edison Completed The World's First Movie Studio

On This Day In 1893, the Black Maria was completed on Thomas Edison's company land in West Orange, New Jersey. It is the world's first production studio. 

The cost of construction cost $637.67, which is about $18,435.77 today . 

Edison closed the site in 1901 after building a glass rooftop studio in New York City.

The Black Maria is also home to the first public demonstration of film which showed three people acting as Blacksmiths.
