On This Day In 1927: 'Freedom Journal', First Newspaper owned by African Americans started publishing in New York City.
After being founded by Reverend John Wilk and other recently freed Black men, the publication selected Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm as the new editors and owners. Both men were highly respected.
The newspaper delivered concrete, educational and entertaining news to recently freed Black people in the north region of the United States. As word spread circulation began in 11 American states, Haiti, Europe and Canada.
The 'Freedom Journal' inspired 40 other Black-owned papers to be established by the start of the civil war.
