On This Day In 1871: William Herschel Discovers Planet Uranus

Uranus is now the 7th planet from the Sun.

On This Day In 1781, William Herschel discovered Uranus.

Upon his first observation, he described the planet as "a curious nebulous star or perhaps a comet."


At that time, Uranus was the furthest planet in the Solar System.
