On This Day In 1873, the Spanish National Assembly abolished the practice of slavery in Puerto Rico. This came after leaders of the abolition movement (Francisco Mariano Quinones, Jose Julian Acosta, Julio L. de Vizcarrando and Ramon Emeterio Betances and Segundo Ruiz Belvis) fought tooth and nail to end this evil injustice.
With no shame, owners were compensated 35 million pesetas for each slave.
Slaves had to continue work for the next 3 years.
Happy Emancipation Day Puerto Rico.
