On This Day In 1961, the Space Age began as Russian Pilot Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly into outer space.
With Gagarin aboard the Vostok 1 at 6:07 am Moscow time, it launched from Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Russia.
The mission lasted for about 1 hour and 46 to 48 minutes.
