On This Day In 1896, The Dow Jones Industrial Average made its debut after being founded by Wall Street editor.
It began with an index of twelve smokestack companies that closed at 40.94. Some of the companies were General Electric Co, Domino Foods Inc, American Tobacco Company and Chicago Gas Company.
