On This Day In 1893, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr.'s invention "The Ferris Wheel" made its debut at the World's Columbian Festival in Chicago, Illinois.
Gale Ferris Jr. was a structral engineer from Pittsburgh and after proposing the idea to Daniel Burnham with the intentions of it being a competitor to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the wheel was built.
1.4 million people paid 50 cents to enjoy a ride on The Ferris Wheel from 1893-1895.
