On This Day in 1923, "Hollywoodland" was erected in the hills of Hollywood, California.
The purpose of the sign was to advertise the name of a new segregated housing development. The sign cost $21,000 to make equivalent to $320,000 in 2019.
It was only intended to reside in the hill until 1925 but with the rise of American film and its attractions, the sign became an international symbol and was left there.
The last four letters were dropped in 1949 leaving it to read as "Hollywood".
