On This Day In 1933, Caterina Jarboro became the first Black opera singer to perform in the United States of America by singing "Aida" at the New York Hippodrome Theater.

She was sought out by operatic impresario Alfredo Salmaggi to perform it with the Chicago Civic Opera. Many critics lauded her performance.

Jarboro was subsequently invited to become a member of the New York Metropolitan Opera Association. Upon recognizing that she was Afro-Indian instead of Italian, her membership was denied.

The legendary singer with honor would later decline being a member of the association after a second invitation was later offered.
