John Holland Cazale was born on this day in 1935 to Cecila Holland and John Cazale.

After starting his career on Broadway in New York alongside his girlfriend Meryl Streep, Sam Waterson and Al Pacino, Cazale debuted as a film actor in The Godfather in 1972.

As he became one of the outstanding character actors of his generation, five of the six movies he acted in were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture (The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon, The Deer Hunter). He is the only actor ever to achieve this feat.

Unfortunately, with Streep by his side John Cazale passed away from lung cancer in 1978 before the production of his last film, The Deer Hunter was finished.

All five of his films have been preserved at the U.S National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.

He would've turned 86 years old today.
