On This Day in 1998, epic war movie directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan was released in theaters. 

Starring Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore, this film was a reflection of the sacrifice entailed in being a solider in World War II. 

It is considered by many critics and film aficionados as one of the greatest pictures ever made. In 2007, AFI ranked it as the 71st greatest American movie. Rolling Stone named it as one of the 20 best movies of the 1990's and the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress selected it for preservation. The depiction of World War II combat received much acclaim as the film is very influential in war movie genre.

Saving Private Ryan was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. The film won five for Best Director (Steven Spielberg), Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Film Editing.
