On This Day in 1984, Carl Lewis set a record by winning the 100m Final in 9.9 seconds at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

It was one of his four Olympic Gold medal triumphs at the '84 games where he would also win the long jump, 4x100 relay and the 200m. 

He would go on to compete in the next three Olympic games in 1988, 1992 and 1996 where he would finish his career with nine total Olympic Gold Medals.
