Hazel Dorothy Scott was born on this day in 1920 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.⁣

After moving to New York City with her Mother at 4 years old, Scott's immense talent was recognized early as she received a scholarship to attend Juilliard at 8 years old.⁣

She became one of the most prominent Jazz and Classical singers & pianists of her generation who was known for being an outspoken critic against racial discrimination. As an actress, her role in improving the representation of Black people in film was tremendous.

In 1950, Scott became the first African American to host her own TV Show, 'The Hazel Scott Show'. ⁣
⁣She passed away of cancer on October 2nd, 1981 and is buried in Queens, New York next to fellow Jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Hodges.⁣

Here she is performing "Takin' A Chance" on the piano in 1943. ⁣
