Historical Birthdays: Happy Birthday Hazel Scott

Hazel Scott was a true pioneer for Black people in the American entertainment industry.

Hazel Dorothy Scott was born on this day in 1920 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.⁣

After moving to New York City with her Mother at 4 years old, Scott's immense talent was recognized early as she received a scholarship to attend Juilliard at 8 years old.⁣

She became one of the most prominent Jazz and Classical singers & pianists of her generation who was known for being an outspoken critic against racial discrimination. As an actress, her role in improving the representation of Black people in film was tremendous.

In 1950, Scott became the first African American to host her own TV Show, 'The Hazel Scott Show'. ⁣
⁣She passed away of cancer on October 2nd, 1981 and is buried in Queens, New York next to fellow Jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Johnny Hodges.⁣

He is widely known as one of the most influential musicians and jazz pioneers of the 20th century.⁣

With a career that spanned 5 decades, he was nominated for 32 Grammy's and won 8 times.⁣

David passed away in Santa Monica, California on September 28, 1991 leaving behind 4 children.⁣

Hepburn passed away on June 29th, 2003.⁣

Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim was born on this day in 1927 to Jorge de Oliveira Jobim and Nilza Brasilerio de Almeida in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He is widely known as on of the greatest Brazilian artists of all time and important songwriters of the 21st century. He is also regarded by many as the father of bossa nova music.

His 1965 album 'Getz/Giberto' was the first jazz album to win Album of the Year at the Grammys while the hit single "Garota De Ipanema" (The Girl From Ipanema) won Record of the Year.

His career kicked off in 1956 when he wrote the music for the play 'Orfeu da Conceição'. His songs garnered significant attention after a performance at Carnegie Hall in 1962.

Jobim passed away in 1994 at age 67.

Creola Katherine Johnson was born on this day in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to Joshua McKinley Coleman and Joyletta Roberta Coleman. 

As a young pupil, Johnson showed strong ability in the mathematics department. Due to schools in her area not offering classes for African-American students, her parents made plans to send her to an institute on the campus of West Virginia State College instead. 

By age 15, Johnson began college and took every single math course offered by the university. She graduated at 18 and became a teacher. At age 34, while attending a family gathering she was made aware that NACA (now NASA) was looking for Black women to solve math problems and be apart of their Guidance and Navigation department. In 1953, she was hired.

Johnson was vital in using geometry and finding paths for space travel. Her math helped send astronauts to the moon and back various times. From 1958 until her retirement, she was an aerospace technologist at NASA.

Creola Katherine Johnson's work was put on the big screen in the movie Hidden Figures, where she was one of the 3 Black Female Mathematicians working to send astronaut John Glenn into orbit.

Johnson passed away in February 24th of this year at 101 years old.

Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, known as, Nate Dogg was born on this day in 1969 to Daniel Lee Hale and Ruth Holmes in Clarksdale, Mississippi. 

Nate started singing during his childhood years as his Mother was a leader in the choir and his Father was a Pastor.

He left high school at 17 to join the Marines, where he would be stationed for 3 years in Japan until he was discharged. Shortly afterwards, Nate along with Warren G and Snoop Dogg formed a Rap trio named "213".

In 1992, Nate debuted as a solo artist on Dr. Dre's first solo project The Chronic. Fans were highly impressed with his distinctive sound that proved to be very complementary to the 90's G-Funk period.

His biggest single "Regulate" which he performed with Warren G zoomed all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. He also released three solo albums and was nominated four times at the Grammy Awards.

Nate Dogg passed away on March 15, 2011 from heart failure.

Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on this day in 1904 to Fred Bunche and Olivia Agnes in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1950, he became the first African-American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche was awarded for his diplomatic work in resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict as he arranged a cease-fire which led to a creation of state for Israel.

As a true student of education, Bunche was class valedictorian at UCLA, earned his Ph.D at both Howard and Harvard University and was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D at American University.

Bunche was a participant at the 1963 March on Washington and the Selma March to Montgomery in 1965. President John F. Kennedy awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.

As he was a highly respected figure in politics and education, Ralph Bunch has been named after many schools, buildings, parks and even a street in Nairobi, Kenya.

Peter Charles Archibald Ewart Jennings was born on this day in 1938 to Charles and Elizabeth Jennings in Toronto, Canada.

He was one of the most prominent and exemplary journalists in the world despite dropping out of high school.

Jennings began his career at age 9 in 1947 as host for a Canadian radio show called Peter's People and anchored for the last time on April 1st, 2005. 

Between those 58 years he explored life as an actor, co-anchored the late night national news in Canada, was the first Canadian journalist to cover the death of JFK, became the youngest U.S. American news anchor, became a Father to two children, built his incredible resume abroad and then became the sole anchor on ABC's World News Tonight for 22 years.

The 16-time Emmy winner was apart of the "Big Three" news anchors (Dan Rather of CBS and Tom Brokaw of NBC) who commanded network evening news from the 80's until the 2005.

Peter Jennings, unfortunately passed away from lung cancer on August 7th, 2005 at age 67 in Manhattan, New York. 

Shortly after his passing, then New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg renamed the West 66th street in city as Peter Jennings Way and in 2011, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences posthumously inducted him into their Hall of Fame.

Today, we remember Robin Williams who would have turned 69 years-old.

The iconic comedy legend starred in movies such as Aladdin, Hook, Good Will Hunting, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning Vietnam.

Check out his performance in the 1995 Adventure film Jumanji where he took on the role of Alan Parrish, a boy who was stuck in a board game for 26 years until a new pair of kids start playing.
