On This Day In 1990, Nelson Mandela visited Boston, Massachusetts as part of his United States tour. He would receive a thunderous and enormous welcome from Bostonians just four months after being released from the shackles of Robben Island Prison in South Africa.

After landing, he visited Madison Park High School before heading to the Kennedy Presidential Library with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and then Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

The future South African President was then greeted by close to 250,000 people on the Charles River Esplanade.
