Historical Passages: Remembering Soichiro Honda

Honda made sure his name would be around for many generations to come.
(c)ASME

Today we remember the man who would influence the automobile manufacturing company forever.

Soichiro Honda passed away 30 years ago at the age of 84.

Despite any formal education, his fascination with cars and invention would push him to start his own own car repair shop at 22 years old.

After doing business with Toyota, his company that was producing piston rings was destroyed during World War II. He would then sell what was left to Toyota and use the finances to create the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946.

Honda was born.

They would go on to create motorcycle that would outsell the likes of Harley-Davidson and compete in Grand Prix and World Championships.

By 1963 Honda's first car, the T360 mini pick-up truck would go on sale.

Definitely one of the most influential men of the 20th century.

He invented the traffic signal after witnessing an accident between a horse-carriage and a car. The three way signal featured stop, go and a direction button that allowed walkers to cross the street safely.
