Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on this day in 1904 to Fred Bunche and Olivia Agnes in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1950, he became the first African-American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche was awarded for his diplomatic work in resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict as he arranged a cease-fire which led to a creation of state for Israel.

As a true student of education, Bunche was class valedictorian at UCLA, earned his Ph.D at both Howard and Harvard University and was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D at American University.

Bunche was a participant at the 1963 March on Washington and the Selma March to Montgomery in 1965. President John F. Kennedy awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963.

As he was a highly respected figure in politics and education, Ralph Bunch has been named after many schools, buildings, parks and even a street in Nairobi, Kenya.
